KDinOK

Last weekend, I took a mental health/personal day from work on Friday and I ventured to Tulsa, OK to visit my long-time friend, Shelby. Shelby moved to Tulsa three years ago when we was placed there for Teach for America. She went to school to be a secondary social studies teacher, but when she was accepted into TFA she was placed as a 1st grade teacher. When I planned this trip in early January, I planned to go to Shelby's classroom so I could see her in action... and of course, for the rest of the weekend, she took me out on the town.

GETTING THERE:
I just felt like I needed to show off these shots of the sky on my way down. I'm not sure what you guys believe in or don't, but if there's a God... this is His doing. It's almost reason enough for me to consider moving South!

MISS EAGAN'S CLASSROOM:
Because I teach high school, sitting in on a 1st grade classroom was a new experience for me. I will tell you that by the end of the day, I was exhausted. The kids did a STEM experiment with sound, took a Math test (counting coins), took a spelling test, did mental Math, had computers class, played at recess, and so much more. It's a much different jam than what I do on a daily basis. Here are a couple snap shots of Shelby in action...

EXPERIENCING TULSA:
Shelby did a good job of taking me around to different Tulsa restaurants so I could experience the places that she and her friends like to go. Some of the local restaurants I got to try were:

  • McNellie's Pub for burgers and beer
  • Yokozuna Sushi for happy hour rolls
  • McNellie's (again) for brunch/mimosas with four of Shelby's friends
  • Laffa for middle-eastern food and cocktails
  • Whataburger -- because I was in OK and had to have Whataburger

I feel lucky in my life to have had a friend like Shelby since I was 12 years old. Nearly 16 years later, she always has the ability to center me and make life make sense. I'm thankful for the ability to take these types of weekend trips. Long distance friendship is hard, but it makes the time together that much more valuable. Until we meet again.
