The original plan for Day 4 was to get up and drive from Breezewood to Gettysburg. Once we got to talking about how close we were to Washington D.C., we decided to rearrange our plans and head that direction instead. I have actually never been, so I was really excited to get to visit, even if it was only for a few hours!
The one thing I absolutely KNEW I wanted to do while we were there was go to the Holocaust Museum. This is a part of history that I am really interested in. I also taught Elie Wiesel's memoir, Night, to my sophomores in Chillicothe last year. These things combined, I knew that I was going whether my family wanted to or not. We all ended up going [and getting in FREE thanks to my dad's Veteran status - nice!], and I was NOT disappointed.

I took an outrageous number of pictures while we there because everything was so interesting. I also shed an outrageous number of tears as I walked through the exhibits. What a time in the world. What a terrible, awful time in the world. It's such a shame that hate based on race is STILL a problem in modern day. What did Jon Stewart say in his monologue? Something along the lines of... Our nation has a gaping, racial would that will not heal, yet we pretend doesn't exist.
After the heaviness of the museum, we decided to walk around and check out the monuments. Between my dad's breathing and my knees, we didn't get to see everything on the list, but we did get to see the Washington, WWII, Lincoln, Korean War, and Vietnam War memorials. One of my favorite parts of the area was the Reflection Pool - even despite the mold and sludge.
