Breakfast in KC (Stop 7/16)

Before going gluten free, Ben and I wanted to go ahead and have one last brunch that I could enjoy toast or whatever. We decided to go to Harvey's at Union Station because it was on our list AND they were currently offering a deal on Groupon! A win-win situation, right?

Being a KC native, I love Union Station. It's big, it's gorgeous... it's honestly hard for me to believe that I've never eaten there before now. Here are a couple pictures of Union Station itself. The restaurant is literally right in the middle, so the picture on the left was the view from my seat.

For my meal, I decided on the old, faithful Eggs Benedict. The hashbrowns were good, but the rest of it was just so-so. I was disappointed in the eggs because they were poached eggs with a hard-cooked yolk; it was not my cup of tea or what I am used to with EB. I also felt like the canadian bacon slices were too small/not proportionate to the amount of egg and bread there was.

Ben ordered the Country Benedict - a fun spin on EB that comes with biscuits, friend chicken tenders, fried eggs, and potato chunks. His food tasted good, but to me, it tasted more like a friend chicken dinner that came with eggs so I wasn't overly impressed.

I think the biggest thing I want to re-touch on about our "Breakfast in KC" tour is that we are not only doing this to try great food in a city we LOVE, but we are doing it to have a great, memorable experience together. I mean, we love getting to talk about what we've liked and not liked about restaurants and giving it ratings. My family and close friends even ask us on brunch days about our experience! It's supposed to a fun thing! With that said, we did not have a great experience at Harvey's. Let me preface this by saying that this has nothing to do with who was actually our server - she was great and we tipped her well. My complaint is about the hostess.

If you've never been to Harvey's, let me first show you a photo of the layout.
When we arrived we were seated at one of the tables you see with a white table cloth - the closest one to the hostess stand, to be exact. We were fine with the situation until the high-school aged hostess loudly started complaing [to anyone who would listen] about how much she hates her job and wanted to go home. This was between text messages on her phone and leaning on the hostess stand, of course. At one point she even told one of the servers that she wanted to shank a customer that had come into the restaurant.

OKAY. I work in retail. I also was a hostess in high school. I feel your pain, girl. Sometimes life sucks and the last place you want to be is walking people to their table or folding sweaters. I GET IT. But shut up. Complain in private and don't blantantly disrespect people who are coming in to eat and enjoy their meal. The whole thing just left a bad taste in our mouths.

I should also note that Ben and I did NOT have the breakfast buffet. I have heard that the buffet is pretty decent and makes for a better experience, but after talking about it, Ben and I decided we probably won't go back to find out.

Overall rating for Harvey's at Union Station: 6/10. The server and the Groupon deal saved this outing from being a total bust!
