Heart-Shaped

Truth be told, I'm kind of addicted to Pinterest... You can find me trolling (yes, trolling) posts at least twice a day trying to find inspiration, ideas that I can tweak, or things I want to try! Well, looking through some pins the other day, I came across this idea to make a heart shaped cake without a heart shaped pan! Definitely something worth knowing, right? So lucky Benjamin got a cake for no reason just so I could try this out!

I naturally started by collecting the necessary supplies. I wasn't feeling brave enough to try to bake a cake from scratch (maybe we'll save that for another day), so I stuck my faithful box mix.

Also, notice my pans! These things are "really old" according to my mother... but are AMAZING for baking! You'll find out why later!

Next, I made my mix and went ahead and ignored the warnings on the box... the best part is licking the spoon!!

Now here is why these pans are amazing... If you see that bar with what looks like a handle, that's exactly what it is! On these types of pans when the cake is done you slide this bar all the way around the pan and it releases the cake. I went ahead and sprayed the pan too, just in case.

I decided to tackle this with two 8 inch circular pans, but it would probably be easier with one circular and one square. Either way, I trimmed one circle into a square. Next, I cut the other cake in half and trimmed it down to fit the square/look like a heart. Then, I frosted and decorated the cake!

As you can see, it's much prettier with frosting and sprinkles! I also saved the pieces of cake that I cut off so that I wasn't wasting perfectly good cake! :)
